The choice between a schedule of works or bill of quantities will depend on the type/nature of your project and procurement route that has been chosen. We would always recommend the use of one of these documents when tendering works as a way of ensuring your expectations are matched by the tenders that you receive.

Bills of Quantities are a means of breaking a project down into exact quantities which are measured in an industry-wide recognised format, thus enabling the works to be priced by a tendering contractor, by inserting their costs into each works item. This document then forms an excellent tool for pre and post contract cost control. By using the rates contained within the document, we can easily manage variations and monitor exact expenditure on site.

Schedules of work break the works sections down in less detail than a Bill of Quantities and do not contain any quantities for the specific work items. The work sections do provide enough detail for contractors to price the works and enable a detailed review of the submitted tenders by our expert Quantity Surveyors. This document can then be used as a means of valuing the works during the project.
